Tesla Cars are banned in Texas and some other States of US

When you’re about to compete in your first electric car race, brace yourself for the sound … of silence. But don’t let those quiet engines fool you because these days, quiet means fast.

Electric car is now booming nowadays. And there are big players ready to join the game such as Detroit, Japan and Germany. But you may get familiar with a new name in automobile industry: Tesla Motors.

Tesla Model S: 300 miles of range on a single charge; 400 horsepower engine that get you from 0 – 60 MPH in 4 seconds, without a single drop of gas. Celebrities are buying them and drove. Matt Damon, Camarun Diuz, even Hummer fan Arnold Schwarzenegger has been drawn to its sleek design in space age gadgets.

And now it’s nightline’s turn. We were given inside access to the Model S and the man behind it. You see for ourselves if this really is – the car of the future.

And now, according to the Highway Safety Administration. Tesla Model S electric car is also the safest car ever with 5-star safety rate.

But the Model S is right at the top is not without controversy. Despite the rave reviews, several states are trying to ban them from being sold.

To understand why, first you need to meet this man - Elon Musk – Tesla CEO – the billionaire tycoon who has already charged the way we shop online and the way we explore space. Now, he’s taking on the car industry: “…we actually doing pretty well and they can seat right here because charging is right here.”

“And how many stories you planned opening in the next step?” – “probably about 50” – Elon said.

You can see like Apple playbook, Elon Musk sells Tesla electric cars to consumers directly, at uniform prices at every store. No hard sell. No commission for employees.

He said:  “We don’t actually train people to sell and this rather train people to educate. We always wanted to be a really low-key kind of friendly environment, where we're not constantly trying to close deals.” Elon thinks people who want to buy cars don’t like dealers and that these dealers are prejudiced against electric cars.

That’s a dig at the traditional middlemen in the car-buying experience: the car dealers. Musk wants to cut them out completely. In fact the dealers are waging an all-out war on Elon Musk.

Their lobbying hard to get his direct sales Model ban in Colorado and Virginia. And they succeeded in Texas.

Now meet the man who helped get Musk booted out a Texas - Bill Wolters, the president of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association: “He typically is not somebody has been told no very much. Elon Musk says that he could never be successful if he sells in franchise dealers. He’s never tried it”.

Wolters invited us to visit him at a Chevy dealership in Austin, mainly to disprove must be read in its all slicked back hair news and shiny suits.

“He said that dealerships are many of them extremely heinous – This is absolutely, totally wrong”.

Bill Wolters ‘s also quick to point out that for all of Musk foot stomping. The only thing Texas ever asked him to do with play by the same rules as everybody else.

“This happens all the time, someone wants an exception to the franchise laws and our policymakers don’t want to make an exception when this company Tesla could do better selling their franchise dealer network, up his own choosing. There is no reason to make a change”

Elon Musk believes the state governments are vowing to pressure from people like Wolters. And American public should be outraged – Musk: “if the public is overwhelmingly in favor or something and then the legislators votes against the overwhelming public interests, that’s a perversion democracy. I mean that’s the whole idea of democracy. You vote for people and then they carry out the will of the people and within this case, they are not doing that because that car dealers are such huge contributors who have little campaigns on this on the local level”

“Although there are some very powerful special interest group that on trying their best to stop us, I feel like ultimately, overly optimistic. I think of that’s just for the people than you prevail. So we are doing our best”.
