Tesla Energy: Tesla Solutions to storage Sustainable and Renewable Energy

Tesla Motors was founded to make sustainable transportation and electric vehicles are not completely sustainable unless the energy source that charges them is also sustainable. Perhaps that’s pretty obvious but it’s something that’s really important and we don’t want to have electric vehicles are powered from fossil fuels. We’d like to have them powered from renewable energy, solar or wind.

Tesla Energy Story

Is Tesla Energy the missing piece of Tesla Story

Unfortunately those solar and wind are of course intermittent. And the times when you want to charge your vehicle might not be the times when you have solar energy falling on your roof or on the middle of the desert if there’s a utility-scale planned. So the missing link here has been how you directly couple renewable and sustainable energy through to electric transportation but also through to other loads. When and how those loads need to be powered. And the obvious answer to this seems obvious has been to apply energy storage in the same way that we’re applying to vehicles and to apply it on the grid.

And earlier this year we launched a completely separate business unit called Tesla Energy. We’re leveraging the same battery architecture in chemistry and ecosystem that we’ve built for vehicles into some new stationary energy storage products and there’s two products here and they were pretty excited about.

One is called the Tesla Powerwall and this is a residential battery pack that mounts in your garage, on the outside of your house, pretty much anywhere you want it’s all-weather rated. Some people even wanna mounted in their living room were inside their house. They’re excited about it. But it fits into the overall product ecosystem that we’re creating. The branding is consistent with the car. It’s consistent with the charging systems that we built and it allows customers to have a seamless link, all the way solar panels on the roof through to powering and charging their car and through to powering the rest of their house if they want to choose to do that.

Tesla PowerWall

To us, it’s really cool missing piece and it’s made possible by the low-cost batteries that we can create by the sense of scale that the GigaFactory gives us. It also has some positive feedback because as we sell more Powerwall we can also reduce the price of batteries even faster for vehicles. So there’s a kind of a self-reinforcing effect here as the entire ecosystem grows.

The other product is the Tesla Powerpack. This is a utility-scale battery system or commercial-scale battery system. This single batteries pack is about a hundred KWH. You can kind of see from one of our engineer here standing in front of it with the scale is like a large refrigerator. And this isn’t quite as sexy or as fast and slim as the PowerWall is but it’s very powerful and this battery pack on its own can power a small business for number of hours or completely eliminate the peak loads of small businesses.

Grid-Scale Storage for Powerpack

Grid-Scale Storage for Powerpack

But we also design this in a way that we can scale them in parallel so that we can connect multiple power packs together into a raise so that feels like this can be possible where we can aggregate hundreds of power packs together and linked them into the utilities structure so that we can start to store utility-scale solar or large-scale wind farm output.

And this give us a chance to actually start adjusting affecting the way that the entire electric grid works. If we want to actually get to a world where we are able to integrate and large amounts of renewable energy we have to start doing more and more of this.

There’s several exciting pilot plans and projects that we’re looking at right here in Nevada. You know, doing things like these with some of the solar and wind resources here.

But our vision here isn’t just to stop here with small-scale, ultimately the vision is how do we get to very very large scale, how do we get to essentially not using any fossil fuels. That’s exciting future that we really want to get to. And this vision is not impossible. If you look at what land area is required to eliminate a hundred percent of the fossil fuel used in the US. From solar it surprising small. This would eliminate all the fossil fuels, all the oil and diesel and petroleum used for transportation, all the coal and natural gas used for electricity and natural gas for heating all of it. If you had a solar array that big, you could stop burning fossil fuels in the US – that’s a pretty compelling solution.

Required Area For Solar Electricity to Eliminate 100% of Fossil Fuel energy use in US

Of course this wouldn’t be all one giant solar array and central Kansas but it would actually end up being distributed all around the country just like it’s happening now. We would see a facility-scale solar going in the desert, we would see solar panels on top of buildings and on top of homes and this can continue scaling if we have storage to a place where the whole grid and all the interviews can be sustainable.

CO2-concentration graph

Chart of CO2 Concentration

And we can do it soon enough because we have a huge carbon dioxide problem facing us. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is growing extremely rapidly in the last decades. Most people are probably familiar with this but this is a really serious problem and it’s formed by burning fossil fuels.

Recent Monthly mean CO2

Recent Monthly mean CO2

In just the last year of the first time in several hundred thousand years, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere jumped over 400 parts per million. That’s a pretty amazing, very tangible, very measurable threshold that we thought we passed. Didn’t get a lot of fanfare but this was a huge deal, that happened earlier this year.

And a lot of people are quick to say that this is just an impossible problem. This must be too difficult, how can we really do this. It’s going to destroy our economy. It’s going to just be too much of a cataclysm to shift all of our energy use away from fossil fuels.

But history is full of very difficult challenges. Even with the Model S people said this was an impossible challenge. It can’t be done. And this is not something that we really are scared of. I think that there are plenty of examples of places where this has worked in the past. One that I think is an interesting comparison is if we look about 50 years ago. There was an anniversary this week I should say 50 years ago this week. There was an interesting anniversary that we passed which was not a lot  people remember this but what this was. It was the first man made satellite in orbit around the Earth. Soviet Union launched Sputnik which completely shocked the US – it taught us very much off guard and we were really far behind. We didn’t have anywhere close to this type of technology. We were not ready to catch up.

Race for the Moon

And again most people were saying this is impossible. We can’t catch up. It’s too difficult, there’s too much of a lead. But this space race, of course we know how it ended less than twelve years later we actually landed people on the Moon which is pretty amazing. Not only did we catch up but we changed all of history and we went to a completely different playing field. I think this was amazing interesting example that literally was just this week 58 years ago.

That’s key point here is that sustainable energy is this generation. For many years we’ve kind of looked around for what is next exciting or stimulating incredibly challenging thing that’s going to rise up. And the transition of all of our energy sources over to renewable and sustainable energy is equivalent to this.

In fact in many ways it’s more difficult in this. Because it’s a longer challenge that will affect more people. And that Moon shoot challenge - the interesting outcome of that endured for a lot longer than just the single footprints on the landing of people on the moon. Have been what it did to the education system. That space race change the way that science and engineering were looked at an education system for decades to come. Almost immediately people started taking science more seriously. Educators got much more involved, people were building model rocket experiments and it became something that was cool subjects, the invoke subject that everyone know was important and understood and potentially connect to real world goals. And it let to basically inspiring a whole generation of innovators, engineers, scientists who went out and created many different companies. They end up building a new economy that wasn’t there previously and created millions of jobs.

 Roket Boys

So this was kind of interesting picture from a book that was one of my favorites book called Rocket Boys. It was about a group of teenagers at that time so inspired by the space race that they started building rockets and basically changed the whole kind of career trajectory from  being in Colwood West Virginia to one where they ended up working in Nasa and becoming engineers.

It’s also kind of interesting and fitting that they were in Colwood West Virginia because that ties directly back into what we need to do today. And I hope thatwe can find ways to inspire students that are also in communities that are full of fossil fuels and where the entire economy is dominated by fossil fuels to get into a sustainable energy risk. But it’s a race with ourselves and against ourselves. This isn’t something where it’s USA vs. Soviet Union, it’s us against really what we’ve done to ourselves.

Already many different education institutes are leading in this regard. It’s not something we’re starting from scratch. There are many student, organizations, student projects solar car racing is one that has been your near and dear to my heart that I participated in and had great fun with.

It’s also been a place where we recruit many students from. Solar Decathlon building efficient homes and efficient solar structures. Also different curricula that are focused on sustainability or energy efficiency or renewable energy.
