The Object 1200 was a Russian wheeled armored car to fill the role as armored personal carrier/AFV in the Russian army. a contest with many proposed vehicles was made in 1965 to select the vehicle who will become the BMP-1. the design of the Object 1200 was proposed in 1964 and the vehicles was tested in 1965, it was offering a welded armor with a thickness of 60mm in the front with a excellent slope, a crew of 3 men, a capacity to carry 8 soldier and a excellent firepower. the Object 1200 was powered by a 300 HP engine with a power weight ration of 21/ton allowing the vehicles to reach 90km/h on the road. Over the Object 765 (who was finally selected to become the BMP-1) the Object 1200 was faster on the road on in the water but the wheels performed poorly in the offroad and when wet they was not having a good adherence to climb a common slope like those in the riverbed. the Object 1200 wasn't armed during the test drive and the contest, but the turret was working and was to be armed with a 73 mm smooth-bore gun 2A28 "Thunder" with an ammunition of 40 shots. The gun was paired with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun (carrying ammunition - 2000 cartridges). In addition, the tower had a starting guide for guided missiles of the anti-tank complex 9K11 Malyutka. Inside the fighting compartment, there were up to four such missiles in the stacks. After the launch, the preparation for the new was carried out manually, from the tower. the identical turret is mounted on the BMP-1. weight was replacing the armament during the test drive for safety purpose.
