Why does FedEx Ground transport use split-style trailers in their semi's (trucks) in the US?
They can be loaded/unloaded faster (each trailer gets its own dock and crew, increasing the speed a individual package can make it through the sort location).
Some states allow 3 of them to be towed together, thus reducing the number of drivers needed by a third.
Each one can be loaded for a separate distribution center, but be hauled to the general area together, both reducing driver count, and increasing package speed.
If it is an LTL carrier where they deliver straight from the trailer, 28 feet is much easier to get into many places where you can not fit a longer trailer, but as a set of doubles can still carry as much as a 53′ trailer for the long hauls between cities.
