20-gun 6th rate Frigate "Arethusa"
20-gun 6th rate Frigate "Arethusa"
Over the past few weeks, I've been experimenting with an interesting shipbuilding trend that was prominent in both the Dutch, British and French navies during the early to mid-1700s. This trend was the 6th rate frigate; a 20-28 gun 6th rate vessel with a frigate rig designed to be the ultimate workhorses for their respective navies. These light frigates were eventually replaced by faster and more economical brigs and other types of ships, but the era produced many beautiful designs. Hence, I've recreated my impression of an average 6th rate frigate here.
The Arethusa features a low profile and "drawn" bow (meaning the shape of the bow is more like a V, not a D-shape as most frigates and up are), and focuses her entire firepower on her gun deck. The weather deck, though exposed is clear and easy to navigate. Her long and narrow hull, complemented by a full frigate square rig gives her great speed as a formidable 6th rate.
Note: If you like this style of light frigate, check out my 30-gun frigate Glorie! Her profile and design is similar, but fancier and notably larger.
Basic Statistics:
Keel Length: 31 blocks
True Length: 33 blocks (+2 for bow structure)
Max. Width: 11 blocks
Rig: Square, frigate (x3 masts, 1 gun deck)
Armament: x18 6-pdr guns, x2 4pdr chasers
Server Price: 11,050 Ducats
Movecraft Class: 2/8
If you wish to use this in a multiplayer environment or post this anywhere, please remember that I built this and mark your post/copy accordingly. Thank you.
The "Arethusa" is in "player scale"- a term I've coined to describe the building scale me and my fellow builders use to build our ships, and something that I think the majority of ships in our minecraft communities do not possess. PS ships are designed not only to uphold an aesthetic appeal, but to also to serve a purpose as a vehicle; a home and a piece of property for a player- or perhaps something survival/adventure maps could use. Ships in this scale are designed specifically to meet the needs of players who use them; no large ceilings, no sprawling 1.1 scale ships.
However, it has it's own unique charm to it. The thing that motivates me the most in building these ships is the knowledge that my ships will not just serve as an aesthetic masterpiece- but as a true ship sailing the seas, engaging in the art of naval warfare and exploring new lands in the name of empire. And that is why I build for The New World, and why I hope that player-scale ships become more commonplace in the minecraft community.
