Anglesey Aluminium (Tinto) Chimney, Holyhead, 1971 - 2024

This is my build of the Anglesey Aluminium smelting plant's chimney stack in Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales, which was demolished on 20 March 2024.

The chimney stack was part of the Anglesey Aluminium smelting plant on the outskirts of the harbour town of Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. It was operated by the Rio Tinto Group (hence the name Tinto chimney) and first opened its doors in 1971. At the height of its operations, Anglesey Aluminium produced 142,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, and was at one point the single biggest user of electricity in the United Kingdom!

The chimney stack was around 137m (450ft) tall and was one of the tallest structures in Wales upon its completion in 1971. It quickly became an iconic landmark to the residents of both Anglesey and the town of Holyhead (even being nicknamed 'the Big Cigarette' by the locals!) and dominated the town's skyline for over 50 years. It also served as a beacon to nearby shipping and air traffic, with the red lights at the top of the stack illuminating at night time. Upon seeing the stack after a long journey, locals knew they were getting closer to 'home'.

The Anglesey Aluminium plant ceased its operations in 2009 and eventually closed its doors for good in 2013. Although now redundant, the chimney stack continued to tower over Holyhead for another 11 years until 20 March 2024, when it was finally demolished in a controlled demolition to make way for planned future redevelopment of the site. This signalled the end to one of the Isle of Anglesey's most iconic landmarks of over half a century.

*Included with this submission is video footage of the demolition of the iconic chimney stack at 14:00 on 20 March 2024. Prior to the demolition, the base of the stack was pre-weakened and several holes were drilled in which the explosives were placed; this would ensure the structure would fall in the desired direction. The demolition was witnessed by thousands of locals, and took only 13 seconds for the structure to topple over to its final resting place.
