The Atlanta class was a light cruiser built as a successor to the Omaha class, but was known as an air defense cruiser with a number of 38-caliber 5-inch twin-barreled guns in its main guns to counter the developing aircraft threat.
Eight Atlanta-class ships were decided to be built before the war, and three were added during the war, bringing the total number of ships to 11.
Flint belonged to a series of cruisers with very powerful dual-purpose guns. The major difference from the lead ship was her short-range AA armament, which was improved at the expense of fewer main guns.
