Here is an Auto Cane Farm that I've made.
It uses 184 redstone, 184 Pistons, 184 Observers 184 Sugarcane, 94 Hoppers and 6 chests. It is made so when the sugarcane grows to 3 stalks high it fires the observer on which activates the redstone powering the piston. The piston breaks the second layer of the cane stalk allowing the cane to fall into the hoppers. It follows a path of hoppers leading to the chests. This is currently our most effective way of earning cash.
