Bran Castle

Bran castle is a 14th century castle situated in the Transylvanian region of Romania bordering Wallachia. A wooden castle built by the Teutonic order in the 13th century was situated at the same spot, but was replaced in 1377 by the current stone castle after King Louis I of Hungary authorized the Transylvanian Saxons to do so in an effort to stop the northward expansion of the Ottoman empire. The castle remained in Transylvanian hands even after the Ottoman conquest of the Hungarian capital in 1541. During the 1620's, the castle saw extensive modifications under Transylvanian prince Gábor Bethlen. In 1687 the Habsburg house would gain control of the region, though the castle continued to remain in Transylvanian hands. It continued to serve as a fortress until it was turned into a summer residence by queen Marie of Greater Romania in 1920, where the castle saw extensive interior refurbishment.

Made infamous through its popular, though probably incorrect, identification as the residence of Dracula, the titular antagonist of Bram Stoker's 19th century gothic horror novel of the same name, it remains a popular tourist attraction today and still operates as a museum.
