Colossus of Rhodes 1:1 scale
This is my 1:1 scale speculative reconstruction of the colossus of rhodes as it may have appeared in 280 BC. I decided to build the version thought most plausible to modern historians since nobody has done it before(that i know of) as its thought it would of been impossible to construct with methods available at the time without blocking off the port entirely during its construction.i decided to make the hand over its eyes hold the flaming cauldron to combine the ideas of it also being a lighthouse with the commonly accepted hand placement.
some history
the construction of the colossus of rhodes began in 292 BC to celebrate the defeat of Antigonus whos seige of rhodes was broken by relief forces sent by rhodes ally Ptolemy I of Egypt and was funded by selling all of the war material left behind to build the statue to there patron god helios. The statue stood for 54 years until Rhodes was hit by the 226 BC earthquake breaking the statue off at the knees and leveling most of the surrounding city ,Ptolemy III offered to pay for rebuilding the statue but upon consulting the oracle of delphi the people of rhodes were afraid they had offended the god helios and refused to rebuild it.The ruins lay on the ground for 800 years until 653 AD when the ruins were melted down by the invading forces of one of the various shortlived caliphs of the era.
little is known about what the statue actually looked like with the only concrete details being the statue stood 33 meters tall and on a 17 meter tall podium. It is thought to have had a hand shielding its eyes from the sun as if looking into the distance based on a possible painting in a temple nearby, with the other hand holding a spear or a flaming cauldron to give the statue a practical function as a lighthouse. Even the location of the statue is unknown with debate on where it could have been next to the harbor with some saying it was nowhere even near the harbor being on a prestigious position on a nearby mountain where it could be seen alot farther away and where there would have been a much more solid foundation.
