About:
The special feature of the new, 216.5-meter-long erector ship Orion is the heavy-duty ship crane with a rated load of 3,000 tons at a radius of 50 meters and a lifting height of around 170 meters above sea level.[1] This means that the ship can not only install the heaviest jackets, monopiles and components of the coming generations of offshore wind turbines, but will also be used to dismantle offshore wind turbines in the future. Modules and building structures of HVDC platforms or oil and gas production platforms to be dismantled can be lifted with it.
Ballast water can be pumped around inside the vessel to keep it level when the crane is loaded.[2]
In November 2019, construction of Liebherr's HLC 295000 heavy lift crane began at Liebherr-MCCtec in Rostock, Germany.[3] In early April 2020, the 145-meter-long boom was installed on the slewing ring.[4] On May 2, during a lifting test of a 5500-ton pontoon filled with water, the crane hook manufactured by Dutch company Ropeblock[5] broke under a load of 2600 tons; the crane boom rolled over and broke. Twelve people were injured, two of them seriously. There were 120 people on board at the time of the accident.[6][7] The damage was estimated to be in the high double-digit millions. The ship's heavy lift crane was repaired and rebuilt in Rostock by the end of March 2022.[8] The ship was delivered to DEME at the end of April 2022.[9]
Specifications of the heavy lift crane[4]
Stroke Stroke

Main lift 5000 tons 35 meters 135 meters
Auxiliary lift 1 1500 tons 70 meters 165 meters
Auxiliary lift 2 200 tons 151 meters 175 meters
The total installed power of the vessel is 44,180 kW. This gives the Orion a speed of around 12 knots. It was equipped with DP3 capability as no lifting legs were installed. The ship has dual-fuel engines and can run on diesel oil or natural gas (LNG). For economical consumption, exhaust gas boilers and heat exchangers were installed to use the thermal energy from the exhaust gases and cooling water for power supply and heating or hot water supply.
Facilities for a crew of around 131 are available on the ship, which can be enlarged by around 100 seats.
