This is the Dixmont State Hospital Kirkbride building built in 1862 and demolished in 2006
It is based on the "Kirkbride Plan" created by Dr Thomas Story Kirkbride. This design, with the central administration flanked with staggered wards on either side was thought to have a highly curative effect on the mentally ill.
the Building at Dixmont was in use from 1862 to 1984 when the hospital closed. In 2006 the property was sold to a developer
with the intent to demolish the building and construct a Wal-Mart on the site. That plan fell through as the land is very unstable
and caused a landslide onto nearby Rt 65. it has been said that the land will not be suitable for building for hundreds of years.
