Edoras

Edoras

"'
Before them stood the mountains of the South: white-tipped and streaked with black. The grass-lands rolled against the hills that clustered at their feet, and flowed up into many valleys still dim and dark, untouched by the light of dawn, winding their way into the heart of the great mountains. Immediately before the travellers the widest of these glens opened like a long gulf among the hills. Far inward they glimpsed a tumbled mountain-mass with one tall peak; at the mouth of the vale there stood like sentinel a lonely height…

Legolas gazed ahead, shading his eyes from the level shafts of the new-risen sun. 'I see a white stream that comes down from the snows,' he said. 'Where it issues from the shadow of the vale a green hill rises upon the east. A dike and mighty wall and thorny fence encircle it. Within there rise the roofs of houses; and in the midst, set upon a green terrace, there stands aloft a great hall of Men. And it seems to my eyes that it is thatched with gold. The light of it shines far over the land. Golden, too, are the posts of its doors. There men in bright mail stand; but all else within the courts are yet asleep.'

'Edoras those courts are called,' said Gandalf, 'and Meduseld is that golden hall.’

- The Lord of the RIngs, Book 3, Ch 6, ‘The King of the Golden Hall‘

Lore

Edoras was a fortified hill-town, the ancestral home of the House of Eorl, and the capital of the Kingdom of Rohan. Brego, the son of Eorl the Young and the second King of Rohan, built the hall of Meduseld in Edoras and moved the capital there from Aldburg in Third Age 2569. Edoras was located in the Folde, the heartland of Rohan, and was part of the King's Lands.

Lining the road beyond its northern gate were the mound-graves of the Kings of Rohan, with white simbelmynë flowers growing thickly on their western sides.

Wulf, son of Freca the Dunlending, invaded Rohan in T.A. 2758 and took Edoras, usurping the throne in Meduseld. But the Long Winter, which had lasted five long months, ended and Fréaláf son of Hild came out of Dunharrow and with a small band of men he attacked Edoras and slew Wulf.

In T.A. 3019, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli arrived in the town to free King Théoden from the influence of Gríma Wormtongue and to rally Rohan against the growing power of Isengard.

Construction

Edoras is the largest settlement in Rohan with a bed-count of around a thousand. As such, this project spearheaded the technique of using house templates to plan out the city. Builders were then able to modify and personalise each building whilst saving time on the initial construction. This helped to reduce the amount of man-hours required - however, this was still a significant project.

As with every other Rohirric settlement, time was taken to research the Anglo-Saxon lifestyle and professions in order to make Edoras feel realistic. Finally, a competition was run to decide on the design for Meduseld, with a special focus on lore accuracy and inspiration taken from Heorot, the hall of Beowulf.

Alongside our many other projects, Edoras took 18 months to complete. For a more in-depth look into the project's construction, you may wish to read the project thread on our forums.

Edoras forms part of a larger project which seeks to recreate Middle-earth in its entirety. Credit goes to MicahVanderman, Eaglz and wheellee for leading this project, and to the entire community of builders for helping out.
