Die HMS Victory wurde am 14. Juli 1759 in Auftrag gegeben. Am 30. Oktober 1760 wurde das Schiff als Victory in die Schiffsliste der britischen Royal Navy eingetragen.
Am 7. Mai 1765, beinahe sechs Jahre nach Kiellegung, wurde die Victory ausgedockt.
Die HMS Victory war ein Linienschiff des 1. Ranges und wurde von Admiral Horatio Nelson befehligt. Am 21 Oktober 1805 nahm die HMS Victory an der Schlacht von Trafalgar als Nelsons Flaggschiff teil.

She was also Keppel's flagship at Ushant, Howe's flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent. After 1824 she served as a harbour ship.
In 1922 she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship. She is the flagship of the First Sea Lordand is the oldest naval ship still in commission.
