Stratocles was born into a wealthy Athenian family around 350 BC. e. In 307 BC. e. the son of Antigonus, Demetrius Poliorcetes, overthrew the protege of the ruler of Macedonia, Cassander, the tyrant-philosopher Demetrius of Phalerum, which was received by the townspeople with jubilation. Democracy was restored in Athens. The leader of the Democratic Party, Stratocles, was remembered by ancient historians primarily for his special obsequiousness to Antigonus and Demetrius Poliorcetes, on whom his power and position in the city depended. Immediately after the overthrow of Demetrius of Phalerus, Stratocles achieved the deification of his patrons. Subsequently, in order for Demetrius Poliorcetes to be able to participate in the Eleusinian Mysteries, he legally renamed the tenth month of the year Munichion into the third anthesterion, and then into the eighth boedromion. In this way, Demetrius was able to go through all the stages of initiation to access the mysteries. According to ancient legend, one of Stratocles’ legislative initiatives was: “Whatever King Demetrius commands, let it be blameless in the eyes of the gods and just in the eyes of people.”
