JR九州885系電車 6両編成 1.5:1

This is a pendulum-type vehicle intended to increase the speed of the Limited Express "Kamome", which used the 783 series and 485 series. It was designed by Eiji Mitooka's Dawn Design Institute.

In 2001 (Heisei 13), a secondary car for the increased number of "Sonic" was manufactured. In 2003 (Heisei 15), 4 cars were manufactured to replace the 6-car secondary car, and in 2004 (Heisei 16), 3 cars were manufactured as a replacement for the accident scrapped car (described later).

All cars were manufactured by Hitachi. The vehicle price is 1.08 billion yen for a 6-car train.

The maximum speed is 130 km/h, which is the same as the 883 series, and the acceleration performance up to 80 km/h is the same as the 883 series. Unlike the 883 series, this type uses an aluminum body, but this is the first pendulum-type car since the 381 series, and this type is the only new train of the JR Group.

In 2001, it won the 44th Blue Ribbon Award from the Association of Railway Friends, the Brunel Award, and the Good Design Award from the Industrial Design Promotion Organization.
