R.M.S. Catalina (1895)

After almost 8 Years, i finally bring to you the RMS Catalina! The ship with probably the longest time between being announced and posted :D

Now completly Remade with my current set of skills in Naval engineering, and a few new design choices here and there :)

The Original Catalina from 2016

Royal Mail Steamer Catalina 1895
In 1894, a new class of cargo ships was commissioned by the Black Star Line.
Due to financial difficulties, the shipping company had to quickly find a way to make a profit.
The original plan was discarded because it was thought that it was less profitable to make a pure cargo class ship and that it would
not achieve the success demanded by the Black Star Line.
Ultimately, the decision was made to expand the passenger area and increase passenger comfort
The ship also received a 1st class and a 3rd class, the latter of which was divided into 2 compartments.
After just one year, the Catalina was completed from the keel upwards the Black Star Line decided to order the Ship at a foreign Shipyard
Not wanting to have it built at a local shipyard for money reasons, the order was placed on Friedrichswerke at the Free State of Friedrichsburg
who made a fair offer and promised to build the ship in the shortest possible time and the ship was completed within a year.
In 1895, when the Catalina was commissioned, she made her maiden voyage towards Boston, New England, where she quickly became popular
with her passengers. The First Class cabins were fairly comfortable even featuring Suites which was uncommon for a Ship of her type,
the third class, however, remained practical, being divided into 2 compartments with slightly more expensive cabins for Third Class in the aft section of the ship
The propulsion was composed of 2 sets of triple expansion steam engines
With her 8 double boilers, enough steam could be generated to keep the ship at a maximum of 18 knots.

First World War
During the First World War, the Catalina was confiscated by the British Admiralty an it was decided that she was to be converted into a
Auxiliary cruiser. She received a not insignificant number of cannons and received sturdy hull reinforcements.
During the war she met some German cruisers where she played a rather minor role, but her crew described her as reliable.
Eventually she ran out of luck and was badly hit in a engagement with another German Auxiliary Cruiser, whereupon she left the battle an
had to withdraw. The Catalina was subsequently repaired, but fortunately for her the war was already over before she could be put back into service.

Post War & End of Carrer
After the war she was extensively rebuilt, including some passenger area expansions, and the ship was mainly used to transport people arriving after the war
wanting to emigrate to the USA. In the 1920s, she mainly did Travels across the north atlantic heading for New York, and occasionally Canada.
The last major overhaul of the ship took place in 1925. Since the Catalina was now quite outdated, it was hoped that a renovation could keep her going for a few more years.
Unfortunately, there was no success because significantly larger and faster ships now dominated, and since the shipping company invested in new ships, the old Catalina fell into disrepair.
From 1927 onwards she made a few trips on her old Southamton-Boston route, but since she had little turnover it was planned to scrap the ship at the end of 1927.
Finally, by chance, a buyer was found who offered a very high sum for the old ship and it was sold. The ship was last seen off the coast of New England in the winter of 1928.
and was apparently abandoned, supposedly the ship became independent one night and drifted into the sea, the next day there was a violent storm and it was suspected that she had sunk.
