ABOUT:

At 4:27 p.m. on June 28, 1914, the Empress of Ireland left Quebec for Europe. At 1:38 the coal steamer Storstad is sighted on the Empress, also in the St. Lawrence River. At 1:45 a.m., fog descends and envelops the two ships. After many signals from both ships and a fatal short exchange of the Storstad, she collided with the Empress of Ireland at 1:55. She rammed them between the two funnels, destroying the ship's main bulkhead. This circumstance causes the Empress to sink within a quarter of an hour. As most bulkheads in the ship are transverse and the ship sinks over starboard no bulkheads can be closed. At 2:10 a.m., the Empress sinks in the St. Lawrence River. Of 1,477 people on board, 1,012 die.
