Royal George 1756
Royal George was launched in 1756 to the design of the 1745 establishment of 100 gun ships.
she measured 178 ft on the lower gundeck and 52 ft at her beam, and 2,046 Tn BM. Royal George was the largest three decker in the Royal Navy at the time of her launch as at the time France nor Spain had three deckers to boast, Russia's 100 gun Zakharii i Elisavet built in 1748 seems to have been the largest in the world at the time.
Royal George was first commissioned for the 7 years war under Sir Edward Hawke she served as his flagship at the Battle of Quiberon bay on the 20th of september 1759 led to to a crushing defeat for France with 3 ships of the line captured and 3 sunk, and the Invasion of England quashed.
That particular action seems to be her most famous action.
She would go on to serve in the american war of independence in the european theater with the Battle of Cape St Vincent 1780 where 6 Spanish ships of the line were captured and one blown up. That mixed with the earlier attack on the Caracas convoy allowed the British to relieve Gibraltar of its siege for a time in which she also took part in.
This all took a toll on the now nearly 30 year old ship and she went in to Portsmouth for repairs and these being completed she went back to sea for a time before being recalled home for a short time. The crew and officers were allowed to have relatives aboard before leaving once more. during all this she was leaned onto her side to under go some small repairs to her hull while still in the water, normally a routine procedure but a sudden gale struck the ship and she listed further over resulting in water coming into to her opened gunports.
Royal George then sank with the loss of 900 lives and a large number of women and children. it remains to this day one of the largest maritime disasters in English waters.
Thanks for reading and viewing, this ship is special because she marks the mid century turning point in warship design, previous first rates had been built to high and ornate with four tier galleries, Royal George was longer and lower strung then her older competitors leading to a much more successful design and ultimately paving the way for ships like Victory 1765 to be built tho not directly related.
