На Вестминстерском проспекте идут активные работы по строительству «Царского театра», который был основан по поручению Императора Николая II. Проект интерьеров был составлен Михаилом Ивановичем Шикановым, а фасад здания, ещё незавершенный, выполняется другим архитектором - Августом Юльевичем Сениковым.

Новый театр, без всяких сомнений, затмил уже существующие театры города; «Царский» стал не только самым большим театральным залом Империи, но и самым роскошным — интерьер выполнен в уже узнаваемом стиле «Второй Империи», родоначальником которого и стал М.И.Шиканов, впервые продемонстрировав свои наработки в оформлении Большого Николаевского Дворца, в частности, его знаменитой Парадной лестницы.

Shikanov, for the first time demonstrating his achievements in the design of the Great Nicholas Palace, in particular , its famous Grand Staircase.
