Skyscraper - Bank of China Tower (Hong Kong) 中銀大廈
Building in Minecraft is one thing for me, but making something that represents my Cantonese culture is even more special. I always loved the look and design of this skyscraper, it was a beautiful sight to see in Hong Kong. Constructing something so complex and difficult was very time consuming for me, but I always thought to myself that it had a cultural meaning to me, so, therefore, I built on and give you this spectacular build of the Bank of China Tower in Minecraft.
History
Built in British-ruled Hong Kong, the Bank of China Tower (中銀大廈) is a space framed superstructure designed by legendary and Pritzker-Prize winning architect I. M. Pei. The cost of construction was around $60 million HKD by the Bank of China, while the MTR Corporation paid $1.82 billion HKD for the plot. Construction began in 1986, with the Japanese contractor company Kumagai Gumi building most of the structure itself. The tower was expected to be finished on the 8th of August 1988, but due to delays and extra work being done with the tower, it was finished in 1989 and occupied by Bank of China (Hong Kong) limited on June 15, 1990. It was the first building to mark the first composite space frame high-rise building outside of the United States.
Design and Culture
I. M. Pei designed the building to resemble growing bamboo shoots, a symbol of livelihood and prosperity in Chinese culture, with it being the 4th tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong. The whole structure of the tower is supported by four giant steel columns at each corner of the tower, where the triangular frameworks move the weight of the whole building onto these four columns. The Bank of China Tower became a landmark in Hong Kong, making it one of the most identifiable landmarks in its skyline. However, its design sparked controversy about its design, where it was the first building design that wasn't consulted by feng shui masters, unlike all the other buildings in Hong Kong. Its sharp edges and giant 'X' shapes were a sign of negative energy in making it a negative source of good chi in feng shui. The locals in Hong Kong called it "Yaat Baa Dou," which means "one knife."
Today
The Bank of China Tower is revered as a very beautiful skyscraper to most people, despite the negative feng shui energy rated by its tradition. Its 43rd floor has become an observation deck, where people are allowed to see the Hong Kong skyline from a distance, while most of the other floors are leased out, with the Bank of China using the bottom 19 storeys and the top four floors, where the ownership of these floors has been moved to the Bank of China (Hong Kong) limited. The tower can also be accessed by the MTR, where it connects to the Central Station on exit J2.
