SMS Nassau

A 1:1 scale build of the German Battleship SMS Nassau. The Nassau class was the first class of dreadnought battleships that Germany built and commissioned for the Imperial German Navy. Four ships of the class were constructed and commissioned; Nassau, Westfalen, Rheinland, and Posen. Designed as a response to the British Lord Nelson class of pre-dreadnought battleships, the design adopted an all-big gun battery of 12 x 28 cm (11") guns in six twin turrets, a concept that would also be seen on HMS Dreadnought. Nassau also carried a secondary battery of 12 x 15 cm (5.9") casemate mounted guns and an anti-torpedo boat battery of 16 x 8.8 cm (3.5") guns. She also carried six underwater torpedo tubes, two facing bow and stern, and four on her broadsides.

I started construction on the ship a little over a month ago, and I'm surprised at how fast it was to build, probably because I've built bigger ships before, and German dreadnoughts aren't very big (yet). In the images and map download, Nassau has two different paint schemes. The one with the red funnel is the ship in 1916 Jutland paint, while the white one is the pre-war white paint. The red funnel was used for identification during the Battle of Jutland, to easily tell apart ships of the High Seas Fleet from those of the Grand Fleet.

Building the battleships of the High Seas Fleet was something that I've pondered for some time, along with the US Standard type battleships. Of course, as the ships get bigger, building the things would take some time, but it's something that I have some interest in.

Hope you enjoy the build!
