Sovetskiy Soyuz-Class Battleship

Hello everyone!

I have a treat for you all today! I've spent the best part of a week creating the biggest ship I've ever built in Minecraft so far, the Sovetskiy Soyuz-class battleship of the USSR. I wanted to outdo myself, challenge myself to create something truly epic and finally beat the Dunkerque which has reigned supreme as my most spectacular warship build for nearly five years now. And this is it! There are a lot of things to go over so it'll be a long read.

Firstly, I conducted a lot of research into the ship, because there are numerous conflicting accounts, differing sources and information largely due to the total secrecy around the ship until the 1980s and the fact that the ships were never completed. Even then, information was scarce and often wrong and tracking down the exact information and resources needed to make it has proven difficult. The World of Warships model was invaluable but wasn't the exact version I wished to build, although it's the majority of the reference that I've used in building the ship.

I should also stress the differences you'll see in this model versus the other Sovetsky (Sovetskiy, Sovetskii, Sovetskyj, etc.) models you see out there. In 1939, the armament was finalised, and the model was finished and this is the model used for the stock ship in World of Warships. However, in 1941 changes were made, including the reinstallation of the two quarterdeck 100mm twin mounts and the reinstallation of the two quad 37mm anti-aircraft guns that were deleted in the 1939 version because the navy wasn't happy with the missing armament.

No drawings appear to exist to showcase what these changes would look like. Instead, all we have are the original drawings which showcase the extra armament as originally intended, as well as the additional catapult and hangar that was required due to the placement of the aft secondary turrets. Thus, I've amalgamated the two models to create my impression of the finalised version of the ship as of 1941. Thus, some elements are up for interpretation, so don't be confused about the differences between my version and others on PMC or elsewhere. Feel free to ask any questions if you're curious, I love talking about this stuff as you can see!

Finally, I should add that I've added some light modernisations of my own. The addition of 12 single 37mm period-appropriate anti-aircraft guns and 12 single 12.7mm DShK heavy machine guns, since it was highly likely such armament would have been added during later construction or if the ship was completed and I've tried to place these appropriately. World of Warships features similar modernisations on the ship, including the addition of radar which wasn't present in the original drawings.

The armament for the ship is as follows:

9 x 406mm/50 B-37 Pattern 1937 Guns [3 x 3]
12 x 152mm/57 B-38 Pattern 1938 Guns [6 x 2]
12 x 100mm/56 B-34 Pattern 1940 DP Guns [6 x 2] (2 of these additional twin mounts present on the original design, then deleted in 1939, then added again in 1941)
40 x 37mm/67 46-K Anti-Aircraft Guns [10 x 4] (2 extra quad mounts present on the original design, deleted in 1939 and added again in 1941, much like the above)
12 x 37mm/67 70-K Anti-Aircraft Guns [12 x 1] (my own addition. World of Warships features 8 of these guns on the stock version of the ship and it was highly likely that such weapons in similar locations would have been added so I've included them as a slight modernisation, which I feel is appropriate)
12 x 12.7mm/79 DShK M38 Heavy Machine Guns [12 x 1] (again, my own addition, but it was reported in some sources that 8 of these guns would have been fitted, although I can't corroborate this. Nonetheless, a number of these mounts being fitted would be highly likely on a completed version of this ship due to typical Soviet naval practice at the time)

2 x Catapults & 2 x Beriev Be-4 (KOR-2) Reconnaissance Seaplanes. The original design called for two catapults, then only one when the quarterdeck turrets were deleted and then presumably two again when the quarterdeck turrets were asked to be reinstalled into the design in January 1941. Originally meant to carry 4 seaplanes, it was decided that the extra seaplanes (that would have to be stored on the deck itself or on the catapult) would interfere with the 100mm turrets on the quarterdeck, the chopping and changing of this section of the ship made research difficult, hence the compromise in my build. The plane is my own design based on the model of the real thing as represented in World of Warships.

So there you have it! I hope you enjoy this build as much as I do, although I didn't always have fun making it, it has to be said. It was highly challenging and deeply frustrating to research. There won't be another ship for a while because I want to take a break and I've got real-life stuff to deal with, but rest assured more will come at some point, so look forward to that!

Cheers,

MCMG
