T-72M1 Main Battle Tank
The T-72M1 is an upgrade of the export Soviet T-72M tank used by the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Hungary. The first batches of T-72M tanks began arriving in the GDR in 1979.
After 1982, upgraded versions of the T-72M1 tanks with improved armor were supplied. In total, more than 500 tanks were produced by 1990.
Initially, T-72M tanks in the GDR were supplied to Soviet troops located in the country. Later, the German National People's Army began to be equipped with T-72M tanks.
The supply of T-72M tanks to the GDR was of strategic importance, as it made it possible to strengthen the defense of the border with West Germany and strengthen the military position of the Soviet Union in this region.
