The Earth, but different
Hello! This is the final result of my Projectober event, in which I made daily progress on a large project I've been wanting to finish for a while.
I also have this nice 3d shot of the map that pmc doesnt want to put in the media gallery sadly
Some facts
- The map is roughly 6k x 3k in size
- The map projection is rectangular, which is the reason for the 2:1 aspect ratio
- The spawnpoint is at the center of the world, but not at 0,0: it's at 64,64 due to worldpainter working with 128x128 chunks
- I made the climatemap for the project in one day, it did take me nearly a full workday though...
What is it actually?
The map is an alternate earth map, as you might've guessed from both the title or the pictures. But alternate in what way? Well, it's quite simple, really. I used the earths real tectonic plates to make a world thats similar, yet subtly, like with north america, or drastically, like with the Somali plate, different. The map has realistic-ish biome placement, but due to the relatively small scale of the project the altitude is better off being described as a rough estimation than the actual altitudes transcribed into the map using a height scale. I capped off the mountains at roughly y=128, so there is enough space to build above the mountains and beyond if you like.
Disclaimer: the altidude is, because of this fact, completely out of whack, as best description. Continental shelfs at nearly half the ocean depth... But I'll use this map as reference for how to improve for later maps, which I already have plans for ;)
The story
This map started out as a worldbuilding project after I tried to copy the earths tectonic plates into Gplates, a program i use to draw on a sphere for worldbuilding, and i decided it might be fun to make a project out of it. I thought that this might be the worldbuilding project to turn into a minecraft map, which is something I've wanted to do for a loooooooong time now. And with october on the horizon, I made Projectober to keep me going with it. And here we are! A finished product of my hobby, and I hope you reading this will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!
What's on the map?
Now you might wonder what is actually on the map, and that is what this section is for. The map has 7 continents, which are in order of size:
- Somalia | 5.58 million km²
- South America | 7.96 million km²
- Austronesia | 9.72 million km²
- Antarctica | 15.1 million km²
- North America | 31.8 million km²
- Nubia | 50.2 million km²
- Eurasia | 54.6 million km²
There are also several major oceans I defined:
- Southern ocean (around Antarctica)
- Pacific ocean (quite the no-brainer)
- Atlantic ocean (IRL Atlantic PLUS what would be considered the Arctic ocean IRL)
- Somali ocean (between Nubia and Somalia, extending all the way to Arabia)
- Austronesian ocean (between Somalia and Austronesia, INCLUDING the Austronesian seas)
And then there are the two outliers here:
- Medditeranean sea (duh)
- Nubian rift sea (that large pointed inlet in Nubia)
Both of these arent really included in any ocean, due to their geography.
Then the last bit of the geography I'll describe is that weird inlet thingy in Nubia. This is supposed to be a massive river delta, where a few major rivers used to merge into one and flow out but the delta and quite a bit of the river basins got flooded and ended up becoming a major inlet/inland sea.
There are also many biomes, that were placed according to a climate map following the Köppen climate classification system. I tried my best to make all climates be represented as accurately as possible. Here is the key for the climate to biome I used:
Tropical rainforest: jungle
Tropical monsoon: jungle edge
Savannha: savannha
Hot steppe: savannha, very low trees
Hot desert: desert
Cold steppe: plains, very low trees
Cold desert: desert
Humid continental: plains, forest patches
Meditteranean: savannha, oaklike trees
Humid subtropical: jungle, oaklike trees
Oceanic: forest, high trees
Subarctic continental: taiga
Polar tundra: tundra, frost
Polar icecaps: tundra, very deep snow cover
That's it!
If you want to download it to check it out for yourself, be sure to do so! And if you want to use it in a video or for another project, I completely support this, as long as you credit me for the map, and you add onto it so that it's not mainly my work.
Further more, I see I made a small mistake on the dropbox link: you have to put all those files you get in the same map you will have to make in the "saves" folder in ".minecraft" to get the world.
And here is a link to a collection with all the maps in the series.
I hope you like it, and if you really enjoyed it, be sure to give it a diamond!
