The USS Austin was the lead ship of her class of amphibious transport dock ships. She was named in honor of Austin, Texas. She was commissioned on February 6th, 1965. Throughout her early career she took part in many US Navy exercises. Throughout her career she also took part in recovery missions for the Apollo missions. In the 90’s she would take part the Desert Storm. She again saw action in that part in world during the Iraq War. On September 27th, 2006 she was decommissioned. Her sister ship, the USS Ponce is the last of her class to be still in service with the US Navy. The USS Austin was scrapped in 2009.
