USS Minneapolis | New Orleans-Class Heavy Cruiser | 1.5:1 Scale
The USS Minneapolis was one of 7 New Orleans-class heavy cruisers and entered service in 1934 before the start of World War II. She was built within treaty limits, specifying heavy cruisers may only have a maximum tonnage of 10,000 tons. Although the class was built within treaty limits, by this time the US Navy had realized that no modern cruiser could be built at the 10,000 ton limit and still perform all the necessary roles, as such the USN had already begun development of the next generation of cruisers which exceeded treaty limits. Although perhaps not as well armed or fast as their Japanese counterparts, all of the New Orleans class cruisers had notable service careers. the Minneapolis was no exception. She participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea, screening the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, the Battle of Midway, and engaged the enemy in the Battle of Tassafaronga, where she had her bow blown off by a Japanese torpedo. It was later replaced back in the US. Near the end of the war, the Minneapolis participated in the Battle of Surigao Strait, one of, if not the last naval engagement of the war. There she participated in a battle line of old dreadnought-era ships, many of which here survivors of Pearl Harbor, and assisted in sinking the Japanese battleship Yamashiro and crippling the heavy cruiser Mogami. Her final combat action was at Okinawa, where she provided AA cover and assisted the landing troops with gunfire. The USS Minneapolis was decommissioned in 1947 and sold for scrap in 1959, ending her career with 16 battle stars making her one of the most decorated US ships of World War II.
