USS YORKTOWN (CV-5) | YORKTOWN CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIER| 1:1 SCALE

USS Yorktown CV-5 was the lead ship of her class of aircraft carriers built for the United States Navy prior to the second world war. When war broke out she was in the Atlantic. After being moved to the Pacific she did some raiding but in may of 1942 she too part in the battle of the coral sea where she and the older carrier Lexington were tasked with keeping the Japanese away from Australia. Lexington was lost during the battle while Yorktown received heavy damage. After being sent back to pearl harbor for repairs, she was back on the scene just soon enough to be present with her sisters Enterprise and Hornet for the battle of midway. During the battle she would recieve heavy damage but she managed to repair herself enough to conduct flight operations. After the battle she had received even more heavy damage but could still manage to move under her own steam. Eventually she was found by the Japanese submarine I-168 and was torpedoed, along with the Sims class destroyer USS Hammann. After she had sunk, a future Essex class aircraft carrier was named after her in honor of the carrier's service
She was 251 meters long, 25 meters wide at the waterline and 33 meters wide overall.
