Zero-X - Original 1966 Design

When the Martian Space Probe fell to an unfortunate incident while being transported across the Allington Suspension Bridge, opportunity arose for rival firms to rise to the occasion. Enter in Glenn Field Spaceport, who constructed the Zero-X. A modular design, the long thin body housed chemical engines capable of accelerating the craft from a runway liftoff to escape velocity. However it was deemed that the wings provided cumbersome width and unnecessary bulk while in space, so two sets of wings fore and aft were redesigned into lifting bodies that could be remotely detatched prior to escaping atmosphere, and reattached for re-entry. The very front of the craft could detatch entirely into the Martian Exploration Vehicle for transport across the surface. Despite some setbacks the project was a success, and Zero-X transported the first manned crew to explore Mars. The design proved so successful that Glenn Field and its assets was merged into the Spectrum organisation, who intend to further explore the red planet.
