GOBBER FOR 1.12.2:

This mod contains an array of powerful tools, weapons, and armor with special abilities.  The Grings and Gaffs provide players with a variety of movement, combat, health, and utility perks.   The Area Defense blocks are a great way to protect your builds or bases from unwanted mob attacks and damage (e.g. pesky creepers).  Lastly, there are some nice foods, fuels, and decorative blocks.  A great choice for adventure modpacks and servers.  Enjoy!

P.S.  You will need a fair amount of iron, gold, and diamond to get started.  Check JEI for recipes.

There is a Gobber Modpack for testing/playing: Gobber - The Modpack

Source Code is attached as "additional files" for each release, I’m not using Github for source code yet.

Original Lore:

Several months back, in the Land of Overworld, there was a pleasant fellow by the name of George Gobber.  George lives in the northern plains, a few kilometers northwest of a small little village called Glencoe.  He has lived there for quite some time and has lived well.  Recently, finding coal and ores has become quite difficult.   So, George started to venture further north into the foot hills to do some prospecting in a new area

The mining was hard but fruitful.  George found lots of coal, iron ore, gold ore, the energy-rich redstone and quite a few diamonds.  Oddly, he also started finding a strange, glowing blue rock that he had never seen before.   When he mined the rock, it broke into what could best be described as “globs”.  They weren’t particularly hard and not at all edible (he tried that with unfortunate results).  Not sure of what use they might be, he kept some and threw them in a chest when he got back home.

A few days later, as George was picking carrots in his garden, a strange thought popped into his head.  He had remembered that the rocks reminded him of the sponges that he had encountered while diving for clay in the waters to the west.  Perhaps the blue rock looked like a sponge because it absorbed something, much like the sponge absorbed water.  But what could that be?   Long ago the people of Overworld had learned that redstone ore contained absorbed energy.  Over time, craftsmen learned many ways to harness this energy to make all sorts of contraptions.

A week later, George took a trip to the nearby village to do some trading with the locals.   He decided to put a few of the blue globs into his pack.  There was a lady in the village, by the name of Gwen Gring, who was especially adept at crafting and enchanting and was a bit of a local expert at figuring out things that most others could not.  He left a few globs with Gwen and headed back home.

Early one morning several days later, Gwen showed up at his doorstep full of enthusiasm.   She breathlessly explained that she tried mixing the globs with various materials and discovered some interesting things.   She mixed glob with some iron, gold and diamond and created a material that was exceedingly strong and seemed to have a mystical energy, of which she was personally well attuned to pick up on.  She inquired where she could find more of these globs.  George shared the story of where he had found these blue rocks and that there were many in one of the mines that he had not yet collected.  She asked him to take her to the mine, so she could see for herself.

As they came upon the area where several blue rocks lay, the cavern was all lit up.  Gwen had thought that there must be torches but saw none.   The blue rocks themselves were giving off the light.   She turned to George and said, “what are we going to call these?”.  George simply shrugged.  Gwen pronounced that they should be called Gobber Ore, in George’s honor.  George nodded.

Over the preceding weeks, reports from other parts of Overworld circulated.   Gobber Ore was being found in other, unexplored areas.  Also, farmers have been finding blue particles while clearing out tall grass in new areas.  It didn’t take long for crafters to figure out that this was yet another form of Gobber.  The blue particles (now called Globettes) could be crafted into Globs.  A farmer to the east is supposed to have figured out a way to actually grow Globettes by mixing them with beetroot seeds.

Gwen Gring had been especially busy discovering the strange and unusual properties of Globs and Globots (the material created by mixing Globs with iron, gold, and diamond).   Gwen had discovered a dozen or more ways to create “Grings” that imbued the holder with unique abilities.   Another inventive crafter further east, Gregory Gaff, recently started creating various staffs that give the holder unusual and powerful abilities.   Even an inventive Chef had figured out a way to make edible food that gave the eater positive effects.  Gobber fever was in full effect.

New and powerful uses of Gobber continue to be discovered daily, raising both excitement and a little concern.   Where this all will lead is anyone’s guess.

Some years later...

George Gobber has done it again!  George quite accidentally discovered a new ore.   He had mined some Gobber Ore with Silk Touch and had them in his inventory while on a trip to the hellish Nether.  Needing to reach up a few blocks to get at some Nether Quartz, he placed a block of Gobber Ore to stand on.  To his surprise, the ore instantly turned red.  When he mined it back with a regular Pickaxe, it dropped a red glob.

He brought some of these red globs, which he dubbed Nether Globs, to his friend Gwen to see what she could make of them.   Gwen quickly discovered that the Nether Globs could be mixed with iron, gold, and blaze powder to create a hard crafting material.   This new material was named Nether Globot.  We will see what interesting things can be made with this new material in the future.

Even later than that...

George Gobber had a son, his name was Gabriel Gobber.  Gabriel was wild at heart and far more adventurous than his father ever was.   After storming the Nether at an early age, Gabriel finally discovered an Overworld dungeon, activated the End Portal, traveled to the Void.  After a great battle with a dragon, he set down a block of Gobber Ore to mark his victory.  To his surprise, it instantly change into something  else.  He broke the block with his pickaxe and it dropped a tan-colored "glob".  He smirked and decided he would call this new material End Glob.   On his way back home, he stopped in the village and left some End Globs with Gwen to see what she could do with it.

The adventure continues!

PLAYERS/SERVER OWNERS/MODPACK MAKERS: Many of the more OP items can be disabled in the config file if they seem too easy for you.

GETTING STARTED:

The key material for this mod is called Glob, which can be obtained in three ways.

  • Mining - Gobber Ore, which drops 1-4 Globs, spawns randomly at y=20-30 and can be mined with any tool
  • Growing - Globettes can be obtained as a rare drop from grass, which can be crafted into a Glob Seed and grown on vanilla farmland.  Globettes can be crafted into Globs as well as Glob Seeds.
  • Conversion
    • Globs can be obtained by conversion of hostile mob life essence with the use of the Converter block.  The Converter block will produce Nether Globs if it is used in the Nether and End Globs if used in the End.
    • Nether Gobber Ore and End Gobber Ore is obtained by silk touching regular Gobber Ore and placing it in the Nether and The End respectively.  It will drop Nether Globs or End Globs if mined in the normal fashion.

The next step is to make some ingots for crafting.

  • Crafting - To make Globots, you will need to craft a Glob with an iron and gold ingot and a diamond.  This results in (3) Raw Globots.  For Nether Globots, use blaze powder and Globots.  End Globots require Nether Globots and Chorus Flower.
  • Smelting - Simply smelt a Raw Globot and get a regular Globot, ready for crafting.

Worldgen & Materials:

  • Gobber Ore - a fairly rare ore found between y=20-30 which drops Globs. The ore throws light so it is easier to find in caves.
  • Nether Gobber Ore - not found naturally in worldgen, but created by placing a regular Gobber Ore in the Nether.   Drops Nether Globs when mined.
  • End Gobber Ore - not found naturally in worldgen, but created by placing a Nether Gobber Ore in the End.  Drops End Globs when mined.
  • Globs/Nether Globs/End Globs - these drop from their respective ores, a bit of Gobber in your hand, not much good until it is processed in some way
  • Globette - a random drop from grass which can be crafted into Globs
  • Nether Globette - a random drop from netherwart which can be crafted into Nether Globs
  • End Globette - a random drop from chorus plant which can be crafted into End Globs
  • Glucky Block - a fairly common block found between y=55-110 which drops random loot when broken.
