Age of Empires I - Egyptian Wonder "Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Khufu at Giza"

The Khufu Pyramid is one of the three pyramids on the Giza Plateau and probably the most famous building of ancient Egypt. As Egypt's largest pyramid and the oldest at Giza, it once reached a height of 146.59 meters, making it the tallest building in the world until the construction of Gothic cathedrals in the late European Middle Ages. Built between 2620-2580 BCE, it held this title for nearly 3,000 years, much longer than any other building before (and likely after) it.

Like most pyramids, the Khufu Pyramid was constructed as a massive tomb for the ancient Egyptian god-kings, or Pharaohs. In the case of this pyramid, its construction was commissioned by Pharaoh Khufu. The construction history of the pyramid is still part of current research and is not fully understood. Nonetheless, today's knowledge is extensive enough to fill bookshelves. The structure is even more impressive when one considers that the Egyptians of that time didn't even know bronze tools, but could only work with stone, wood, copper, and human muscle power. This achievement is practically incomprehensible today. It's equally astonishing that the pyramid's dimensions still form nearly a perfect square with an ideal slope according to today's standards.

Today, although the pyramid has shrunk somewhat due to natural weathering effects and human intervention, losing its original chalk-white color, it has hardly lost any of its mystical allure.

Die Cheops-Pyramide ist einer der drei Pyramiden auf dem Gizeh Plateau und das wahrscheinlich bekannteste Gebäude des alten Ägyptens. Als größte Pyramide Ägyptens und älteste von Gizeh erreichte sie einst eine Höhe von 146,59m und war damit bis zum Bau der gotischen Kathedralen im ausgehenden europäischen Mittelalter das höchste Gebäude der Welt. Mit ihrer Errichtung zwischen 2620-2580 v. Chr.hielt sie damit diesen Titel fast 3.000 Jahre und damit sehr viel länger als jedes andere Gebäude vor ihr (und auch wahrscheinlich nach ihr).

Die Cheops-Pyramide wurde – so wie die meisten Pyramiden – als riesige Grabanlagen für die alt ägyptischen Gottkönige – Pharaonen – errichtet. Im Falle dieser Pyramide wurde ihr Bau durch den Pharao Cheops beauftragt. Die Baugeschichte der Pyramide ist bis heute immer noch Bestandteil aktueller Forschung und ist nicht vollständig bekannt. Trotzdem ist das heutige Wissen bereits groß genug, um Bücherregale zu füllen. Das Bauwerk ist noch beeindruckender, wenn man sich vor Augen führt, dass die Ägypter damals noch nicht mal Bronzewerkzeuge kannten, sondern nur mit Stein, Holz, Kupfer und Muskelkraft arbeiten konnten. Diese Leistung ist heute praktisch nicht mehr nachzuvollziehen. Umso erstaunlicher ist auch, dass die Maßen der Pyramide selbst nach heutigen Maßstäben ein nahezu perfektes Quadrat mit eine idealen Neigung darstellt.

Heute ist die Pyramide zwar durch natürliche Wettereffekte und menschliches Einwirken zwar etwas geschrumpft und hat ihre ursprüngliche kalk-weiße Farbe verloren, doch hat sie dadurch kaum was an ihrer mystischen Strahlkraft verloren.
