Middle Earth Map

This is a rather ambition project that I think comes up far to often as incomplete in the archives here.

A scaled playable replica of Lord of the Rings Middle Earth. The Northern border in Forodwaith, The southern Borders in Harad, the western Edge just after the Sea of Rhun, and the eastern edge extending to Lindon and a large chunk of the Belegaer Great Sea.

Ive loved Lord of the Rings since I first read the books some 20 years ago. The level of detail used in the world is unsurpassed and Ive always wanted to be able to explore the Mines or Moria or the Forests of Fangorn.

The map will be 36,000 x 24,000 blocks in dimension, representing the 18,000 x 12,000 mile map from the story.

Stage 1: The coastline. To do this ive make an A1 map of middle earth, It fills my dinning table. The map will be used to make a co-ordinate based mapping system for drawing the coastline.

Stage 2: The Terrain. More specifically, Mountains, Forests and Lakes/Sea's. Im hoping to incorperate not just LotR but also the Hobbit areas too. Including the following terrain.

The Blue Mountains
Weather Hills
Moria
Grey Mountains
Mirkwood
Ironhills
Sea of Rhun
Fangorn
Mordor (obviously)


Once the world is built the hard part will be the iconic structures. Im hoping to include the following as a start.

Helms Deep
Lorien
Erebor
Minas Tirith
Osgiliath
Barad-Dur
Isengaurd
Dol Guldur


The purpose of the map will be made as a survival map for server style play. Spawn being the White City, from there players can use their knowledge of the world to decide what empire they wish to take over, either solo or in groups. The Map can then be periodically reset so different choices can be made. Ive always thought this would make an amazing Factions style setting.

Currently I have rendered the 36k x 24k map and begun working on the coastline mapping on paper. Once im happy with the details a rough transpose into the map will begin. I wouldn't like to give a time frame on this but I will keep working on it and posting notable updates!
