ABOUT:
The RMS Empress of Ireland was laid down on 10.4.1905 in the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Company shipyard on the Helling Four. The ship was christened by Mrs. Alexander Gracie on 27.1.1906.
The maiden voyage began on 29.6.1906 in Liverpool and ended after 6 days and 15 hours in Québec.
On 1.8.1906 she completed the fastest westbound Atlantic crossing from Moville to Father Point in 5 days and 10.5 hours.
On 14.10.1909 the Empress of Ireland collides with an object below the water surface while entering the St. Lawrence River, but still arrives in Québec with water in the cargo hold without assistance on 15.10.1909.
On 16.10.1909 the Empress of Ireland barely escapes a harbour fire in Québec whereupon the damage to the hull cannot be investigated as the entire port of Québec burned down.
The fastest eastbound Atlantic crossing was completed by the Empress of Ireland in 5 days 10 hours and 58 minutes on 16.9.1910 which ran from Father Point to Moville.
On 11.7.1913 she was given position 13 in the parade of merchant and warships held by gladstone docks in Liverpool to celebrate the opening.
On 28.6.1914 the Empress of Ireland begins her 96th and last Atlantic crossing.
In the night of 29.6.1914 she sinks after a collision with the Norwegian bulk carrier Storstad in the Sank-Lorenz-Strom.
On 11.7.1914 the Storstad is blamed for the collision and on 8.9.1917 it sinks after a torpedo.
The wreck of the Empress of Ireland is found on 17.7.1964 by divers.
