Germania, Die Reichauptstadt Des Grossgermanisches Reich Der Deutschen Nation
Keep in mind that this is a poorly made version of the city made from the Chisels & Bits mod, also I don't support National Socialism.
The City of Germania was the NSDAP plan for Berlin, they chose the name "Germania" as it was a symbol of the unification of all Germanic people. Here, I attempt to re-create what they planned for the city & others. This project will be available for download sometime in the near future when the the area between the north and south stations and the old town are competed.
This was also inspired from other Germania projects. I am considering making other places at a miniature scale in a post ww2 axis victory world.
Introduction
After his rise to power, Hitler wanted to change Berlin. He thought it wasn't good enough. Berlin was just a merely medium sized city and provincial compared to other European capitals like Paris and Vienna. He wanted to make Berlin even greater than those cities and only rivaled by cities in antiquity, what Berlin needed was massive monuments that made individuality disappear and a massive redevelopment of new roads and structures.
Above: Satellite of modern Paris. In the mid 19th century - Paris was also heavily transformed by Haussmann with new wide streets and boulevards and he was also one of Speer's inspirations.
Above: Satellite of Vienna. Vienna was an important city in the HRE and was also the capital of Austria which was ruled by the Habsburgs. Hitler himself was in the city in 1913 simultaneously with Stalin, Trotsky, Tito, and Freud. After Anschuss Vienna itself had reconstruction projects.
Above: Modern Satellite Image of Berlin - although it has suffered damage in the WW2 and changed a lot since then, the layout is still almost similar. Although not in scale, the historical centre of Berlin is a little bit smaller than the other two cities. The city is also younger than the other two cities, only dating from the 13th century By the 17th century it was the capital of a small state of the HRE named Brandenburg ruled by an Electorate and it became the new capital of the militaristic state of Prussia who took over. The Prussians would eventually unite all of the German states except Austria in 1871 so Berlin became the Imperial capital of the 2nd Reich. The Greater Berlin act in 1920 made Berlin the 3rd largest municipality, Speer's plans would expand the Inner city with monumental structures.
The beginning of NS urban redevelopment plans
So in the 1930s he hired many architects - the most famous one being Albert Speer who was the chief architect and he was in charge of the General Building Inspection in Berlin. The National Socialists planned to lots of new buildings, mostly in neo-classical style. As The NSDAP sorted Germany's regions in Reichgaue, the architects were ordered to design gauforums for each gauhauptstadt. The only one that was built was in Weimar, which still exists today.
Above: Plan of the project showing the main part of the North South Axis from the north to south stations.but these buildings shown here were not the only planned to be constructed.
Above: Model of the centre of the Germania project.
Naming
The name 'Germania' was supposed to represent the unification of all Germanic people in mainland Europe as the capital of the Greater Germanic Reich.
The Spreebogen
For Berlin, the spreebogen was to be redeveloped. All of the buildings expect for the Reichstag was to demolished ; The victory column was to moved into Tiergarten, one of the only plans completed. The Volkshalle was to be erected there where Hitler could make speeches despite the problem of the 150,000 spectators creating indoor weather. New government buildings were also going to be built around it. The Fueher's palace on the west side would have been Hitler's new residence in Berlin. The Great
Square was north of the East-West and North-South Axis. Speer considered demolishing the Reichstag but Hitler objected and ordered him to a design a new Reichstag.
Above: The Volkshalle is the main landmark of the project, being around 300m tall. This building would have been used for rallies and speeches as well as being a cult site.
Above: The east of the square has the Wehrmacht High Command and the Reichstag which was not going to be demolished and instead a new bigger Reichstag would be built next to it.
Above: On the west side - there would be 3rd version of the Reich Chancellery and colossal Fuehrer's palace.
East-West Axis and the Old Historical centre
The broadening of the East-West axis was completed but nothing else. The Iconic Brandenburg Gate was to have it's pavilions moved away to make way for traffic. On the west of this axis, there would be a large university and the Mussolini Monument was to be built, as well as the completed Olympic stadium. Places such as: The East Asian, Race, Egyptian, Germanic, WW, and 19th century art museums were to built near the museum island and they were designed by Wihelm Kreis. Also planned were new structures and facilities on both sides of the axis.
Above: The New Reich Chancellery on Vossstrasse built in 1939, was one of the only buildings ever constructed but since an even bigger Chancellery was planned, it would be given another purpose.
Above: Pariser Platz became decorated with Nazi structures. The Brandenburg Gate's pavillions were planned to be moved away while the main office of the GBI would have been built along with an additional tower.
North-South Axis
The North-South Axis would have had a pool north of the Volkshalle while south, there would have been many monuments, public buildings, administrative buildings, and shops along the Avenue Of Splendors. At the end of this street would have been the Triumphal Arch, a problem with this is that Berlin has sandy soil so Speer ordered French POWs to build a column to test it - it is slowly sinking and it is still there.
Above: A large pool filled with sweet water was to made here. Several buildings around it were planned. On the west side, there would be a new Police Headquarters, a new City Hall, and a technical Town Hall. On the East Side, there would be the High Command of the Kriegsmarine (Navy). The Nordbahnhof would have been located at the north side.
Above: The High Command Of The Kriegsmarine.
Above: The new Runderplatz would have been near Potsdamerplatz. One of the buildings, the House of German Tourism, was partiallly constructed and never finished. It ended up demolished in 1964.
Above: The area between the plaza and south station would have been filled with ministries, shops, apartments, hotels, restaurants, private administration buildings, an opera, a theatre, a grand cinema, a cabaret, a thermal bath, a philharmonic hall and other monumental structures.
Above: A square next to the Avenue of Splendours.
The New Stations
Two new stations would have also been built at both ends of the north-south axis, with the new breitspurbahn trains, these trains would be double-deckered and be used to transport passengers and goods across Greater Germany, colonists would have used these massive trains to settle in conquered eastern territory. Since the Avenue of Splendours would have had to destroy the rails coming towards Anhalter and Potsdamer stations and therefore decommissioning them, the Anhalter Bahnhof would have been converted into a Swimming Pool. The fate of Potsdamer Bahnhof was not fully decided. Lehrter got in the way of the Volkshalle and would have to be demolished - being replaced by another small station nearby.
Above: The Nordbahnhof would have been located in Wedding.
Above: The Suedbahnhof was planned to be larger than the Grand Central Terminal in NYC.
Suedstadt
There would have also been a satellite town down south with apartments and an industrial park.
Construction
Their ambitious projects supplied the construction industry which would give the unemployed jobs, this helped solve unemployment from the Great Depression. All of this would have costed billions of Reichmarks making it very expensive - The New Reich Chancellery alone costed 90 million Reichmarks to build now think about the entire project would cost plus all the other projects elsewhere and getting all of the materials needed. Slaves would have worked themselves to death in camps and quarries to supply materials for the buildings. Construction halted in 1943.
WW2
The NSDAP also saw an advantage to the bombings in Germany, they didn't have to demolish the buildings themselves! In the end it was never built due to Germany losing the war and the fall of the Third Reich.
Above: Germania was never realised and Berlin was heavily bombed- the allies were getting closer and closer to the centre of Berlin. On April 30th, 1945, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker, Nazi Germany surrendered on May 8th. The British, French, and Americans occupied west Berlin while the Russians had the other half. It would become divided for 40 years between the capitalist West Berlin and communist East Berlin. The chief architect, Speer survived and was tried in Nuremberg and was imprisoned for 20 years, dying in 1981. Berlin has become a modern capital since re-unification in 1990.
Postwar
In this alternate timeline, the redevelopment plans would have been completed by the 1950s. Other countries would have been inspired by the city and would want to rebuild their own capitals in their own monumental style. The population of the city would have probably been approximately 10 million by 1960.
The Far Future
Hitler ordered Speer to work out the ruin value theory of these new buildings. If the Thousand Year Reich is taken literally, then after the 30th century, the Third Reich ends. In the far future these buildings would be in spectacular ruins just like the ancient ruins we see now.
Keep in mind that this is a poorly made version of the city made from the Chisels & Bits mod, also I don't support National Socialism.
