Wind Bells (Fūrin)

The Fūrin

Starting as fortune-telling tools in China and hung from stalks of bamboo, Japan slowly started integrating bells during the Heian period into Buddhist temples. They were often displayed on balconies to ward off evil spirits. As time went on the bells would become much more compact and found more often in houses rather than places of worship.

Today the Fūrin is used during hot summers. The colorful paper or tanzaku, will fly in the breeze causing the Fūrin to chime. Symbolically representing the wind blowing but is also associated with a feeling of cooling.
