How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric car?

Charge times of an electric car vary greatly, and of course it depends on the capability and size of the battery, as well as the ability and speed of the charger.

In average, it takes 4.5 hours – 6 hours to fully charge a pure-electric car on 240V electric network. However, normally we don’t wait until the battery completely empty to charge it. So the actually time could shorter in real life.

The Plugin-Hybrid cars require less time to charge than pure EVs. This is because Plugin-Hybrid cars can recharge themselves while running in gasoline mode. To make it clearer: The Toyota Prius Plug-in needs 1.5 hours to fully charging while Chevrolet Volt needs 4.5 hours to do so.

In some states or countries, where the household electricity is 110V, it requires 2 times more to fully charging. 100V standard household outlet, EVs expected to get 4 miles of running for every 1 hour charging, while in 240V charger, the number will be 8 miles of running for every 1 hour charging.

We can also see the DC fast chargers – the Tesla Supercharger network - which can support 50 - 70 miles of range in about 1/3 hour (20 mins). The superchager network is expanding around the country.
